IN ANOTHER STORY: 40 acres fire near SDSU campus

Firefighters are responding to a brush fire southwest of the San Diego State University campus on Thursday afternoon. Authorities have established that there is no threat to the campus. A fire was reported in the canyon near Fairmount Avenue and Montezuma Road around 1:45 p.m. According to San Diego Police Department Lt. Dan Meyer, the fire appeared to have started when strong winds blew through an area with overgrown vegetation and palm trees.

As of 4 p.m., the wildfire had burned approximately 40 acres and was 0% contained. A smoke advisory has been issued for Central and Southeast San Diego, encompassing Mission Valley, Lemon Grove, and Encanto. Thousands of individuals were told to evacuate from numerous neighborhoods surrounding the fire, beginning south of Alvarado Canyon Road, west of Hewlett Drive, north of Monroe Avenue, and east of Montezuma Road.

Several schools were affected, including Hardy Elementary. Students from the school have been evacuated to Viejas Arena at SDSU, which is accessible via Canyon Crest. A temporary evacuation site has been established at the Allied Gardens Recreation Centre, situated at 5155 Greenbrier Ave., San Diego, 92120. The Red Cross is on-site to aid evacuees.
