An unfortunate incident happened on Monday in the Bronx when a Metro-North train struck and killed a student from Fordham Preparatory School. This tragedy took place less than a month after the 16-year-old male student who was the first to be killed by a train at the Jesuit-run high school on the Rose Hill campus. At the time that this piece appeared in The Ram, neither the school nor the New York City Police Department had made the suspect’s identify public.
Fordham Preparatory School President Rev. Christopher J. Devron, SJ, issued a statement addressing an event on Tuesday afternoon. The unexpected and devastating death of a sophomore student the previous evening was announced in a statement that reflected the profound sorrow and shock of the entire Fordham Prep community. The statement also made it clear that the school is in daily contact with the student’s family and has assured them that they have the entire backing of the Fordham Prep community at this trying time in the form of thoughts, prayers, and support.
A student was hurt at 3:30 PM after being struck by a train traveling in the opposite direction, northbound, according to MTA spokeswoman Meredith Daniels. There were no scheduled stops for the train when it traveled past the station at the Botanical Garden. According to law officials, it appeared as though the person deliberately leaped in front of the train. This incident led to Metro-North delays on Monday afternoon at the Botanical Garden station, which were announced to the Fordham area. This conduct most likely had some connection to the preceding incident.
John Carroll, the associate vice president of Fordham University’s Department of Public Safety, recently admitted that when he sent the email, he was unaware that the victim attended Fordham Prep.
