According to a family statement, Springer passed away peacefully on Thursday at his home in the Chicago suburbs. In 1977, Springer was elected as Cincinnati’s 56th mayor.
Before transitioning into a new position as a talk show presenter in the early 1990s, he first departed the road of a political candidate to work as a news anchor and commentator for WLWT in Cincinnati.

The Jerry Springer Show has been criticized as “trash TV” by a number of political and community figures, and there have been claims that some of the episodes were manufactured. It was a hit with TV viewers in spite of these concerns. In 2003, an opera based on the series had its London premiere; Springer was not a cast member. The critically lauded performance went on to appear in other American cities after winning the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
