After reportedly ramming his car into 18 passengers at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas, killing eight and wounding ten, a motorist has been charged with manslaughter.

At 8:29 on Sunday morning, the accident reportedly took place close to the Ozanam Center, according to Brownsville police. Some of the victims struck by the gray Range Rover, according to Brownsville police spokesman Martin Sandoval, were immigrants being looked after by the Border Patrol. All of the casualties were guys, according to Brownsville Police Chief Felix Soda, and several were from Venezuela.

The employer claimed that the driver, George Alvarez, 34, attempted to flee the scene but was apprehended by other people.

Alvarez, according to Sauceda, had a “extensive criminal record” and was detained on eight counts of manslaughter among other charges.

Alvarez made an appearance in court on Monday, and the bond was set at $3.6 million overall.

Authorities informed ABC News on Sunday that the FBI is investigating if the collision was intentional and, if so, whether domestic violence extremism was the driving reason. The FBI is not the main agency in the inquiry; rather, it is aiding local and state investigators.

The cause of the accident or whether it was deliberate were not discussed by the investigators.

Federal and local authorities combed through the suspect’s social media and said he came back “clean and clean,” the person said.

On May 7, 2023, in Brownsville, Texas, police look into the scene after a car struck pedestrians close to the Ozanam Center, an immigrant and homeless refuge.

The ACLU released a statement on Sunday saying, “We mourn the victims of Brownsville, Texas, who were struck to the ground in front of an immigrant shelter where people from all over the world are seeking shelter and safety.””

The ACLU continued, “We are aware that the reason is still being investigated. This horrifying episode occurs after weeks of Texas lawmakers stepping up their anti-immigration rhetoric, and the Biden administration is mulling a new asylum prohibition designed to deter rather than welcome immigrants seeking refuge.
